Silverado Engine Defects
Class Action

What is the Silverado Engine Defects Class Action?

CASL is funding a class action alleging that GM Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) and its parent company General Motors knowingly sold certain vehicles in its Chevrolet Silverado 1500 range whose engines were defective in design and manufacture resulting in significant engine problems and, on occasions, complete engine failures. This follows widespread reports of engine failures in Australia and overseas, multiple recalls, and class actions already filed in the United States.

The Silverado Engine Defects Class Action in Australia aims to seek real compensation for affected Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners.

Court Orders

On 30 July 2026, the Federal Court of Australia made orders on several procedural matters to move the case forward:

  • Discovery of US safety investigation documents: The Court ordered that GM produce important safety-related documents that were previously provided to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of investigations into the vehicles.
  • Respondents' standard discovery: The Court ordered GM to produce relevant documents in tranches between October 2026 and February 2027.
  • Next case management hearing: The matter is listed for a further case management hearing on 8 September 2026.

When might the case go to trial?

On 30 July 2026, the Court noted its present expectation that the proceeding may be listed for final hearing during the period between October 2027 and the end of 2027. We will keep group members informed as the trial date is confirmed.

What does this mean for group members?

These orders represent meaningful progress in the case. The production of US safety investigation documents will assist in moving the proceedings forward. Group members do not need to take any action at this stage.
